Ascension Catholic hires Benny Saia as footbal coach

DONALDSONVILLE – Ascension Catholic High School has hired Benny Saia as its new football coach.

Saia, 60, has compiled a 110-55 record that includes a 15-year stint as Dutchtown High School’s first football coach.

Ascension Catholic has finished as the Division IV state runners-up the past two season and Saia replaces Drey Trosclair who was relieved of his duties last month.

Saia is a graduate of Tara High School and was a member of the 1974 state championship team. He also was an assistant on a state championship team at Crowley.

During his tenure at Dutchtown, he coached Eddie Lacy, Eric Reid, Landon Collins and Justin Reid. Other head coaching assignments for Saia have included Catholic-Pointe Coupee, Tara, Woodlawn and Thibodaux.
