Ascension Parish Class 3A and Below Week 2 Roundup: D’ville, ACHS cruise to victory, Lions edge Ben Franklin

In Ascension Parish Football Week 1 action for Class 3A and below, Donaldsonville and Ascension Catholic crushed their opponents, while Ascension Christian pushed past Ben Franklin.

Donaldsonville 50, White Castle 8

WHITE CASTLE – The Fighting Tigers (2-0) scored four first quarter touchdowns and added a pair in the second to run away from White Castle Friday night in a River Road rivalry game at Rocky Ourso Memorial Stadium.

Donaldsonville, under second-year coach Brian Richardson, got five total touchdowns from senior quarterback Jaylin Williams and the defense led by middle linebacker Tahj Brown, a Houston commit, held the Bulldogs scoreless through three quarters.

Williams threw for three touchdowns and rushed for two more, while senior running back Jemon Pleasant had a rushing and receiving touchdown and rushed for a pair of two-point conversions.

The Tigers led 30-0 after one quarter of play following a 4-yard touchdown run by Williams who began the evening with a 34-yard rushing score. Pleasant added a 5-yard touchdown run and Christian Bell followed with a 40-yard interception return for a touchdown.

In the second quarter, Williams completed touchdown strikes to LaDarius Jackson and Jeffery Johnson from 45 and 36 yards out to push the lead to 44-0 at halftime. Pleasant added a 19-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter and White Castle’s only score came on a 30-yard run by Dionte Bracken in the final stanza with Javier Batiste running in the conversion.

The Bulldogs travel to West Baton Rouge Parish Friday night to face former district foe Port Allen.

Ascension Catholic 60, Sophie B. Wright 14

NEW ORLEANS – The Bulldogs (2-0) scored 60 or more points for the second week in a row with a blowout victory over Sophie B. Wright Friday night amassing 290 yards rushing on 35 attempts while limiting the opponent to just 115 total yards.

Ascension Catholic, coached by Drey Trosclair, scored multiple touchdowns in each of the first three quarters including four in the third. The Bulldogs had two running backs rush for three touchdowns each in senior Jamar Barber and sophomore Jai Williams and senior quarterback Kevin “Bubba” Gautreau Jr. rushed for a score and threw for another.

Barber scored on runs of 12 and 18 yards as the Bulldogs took a 14-8 lead after one quarter. Gautreau added a 1-yard touchdown run and Mason Zeringue recovered a fumble for a touchdown in the second frame to build a 26-14 halftime lead.

Williams took over in the third quarter scoring three straight times on runs of 25, 5 and 35 yards and Trey Medine’s 5-yard touchdown reception capped the scoring in the fourth. Rodney Blanchard converted 6-of-7 point after touchdown attempts.

Ascension Christian 7, Ben Franklin 6

NEW ORLEANS – The Lions (1-1) got their first victory of the season by stuffing a two-point conversion by Ben Franklin late in the fourth quarter Friday night in the Superdome.

Ascension Christian, coached by Josh Puryear, edged Franklin in total yardage 161-151 as sophomore Derrick Varnado completed 5-of-12 passes for 88 yards and freshmen Zachary Diez completed 3-of-9 passes for 14 yards and one touchdown. The Lions also rushed for 59 yards on 33 attempts to counter Franklin’s 151 rushing yards on 44 attempts.

Diez connected with K’Von Delone for a 10-yard touchdown pass with 10:57 remaining in the game and Hayden Cashat kicked the extra point which proved the difference. Franklin’s Isaiah Travis rushed for a 3-yard touchdown with 5:17 remaining but the conversion was stopped to preserve victory.

Delone finished with 28 yards on three attempts and Landon Ortego had 25 yards on six attempts. Leading the Lions on defense were Brennan Tramonte with 11 tackles and Ortego with five, while Nicholas Davis had a pair of sacks.

Ascension Christian will host Houma Christian Friday night at The Rock.
