At the halfway mark in the District 5-5A baseball race, East Ascension and Catholic High are tied for first with 4-1 records with two weeks remaining in the baseball regular season.
The Spartans stunned the Bears 13-8 on the strength of a nine-run fourth inning to overcome a 6-0 deficit last Saturday and hand CHS their first district loss in over two years. Jared Falgoust topped the Spartan comeback with a 2-hits, including a double and three RBIs. Chance Simmons picked up the win in relief.
Here’s a look how the local matchups have gone the first two weeks with East Ascension and St. Amant scheduled to play their two-games series to close out the regular season April 16 and 18.
Dutchtown vs. East Ascension
Pitching took center stage in the split between Dutchtown and East Ascension to begin 5-5A district play two weeks ago.
Blaise Foote pitched and hit the Spartans to a 6-2 win in the first game with two hits, including an RBI triple. The senior righthander also went the distance allowing two runs on six hits while striking out eight.
Dutchtown gained a split of the two-game series behind the complete game effort of Jessie Miler, who struck out four and also allowed four hits in improving his record to 5-0 on the season.
Cohen Parent went 1-3 and drove in two of the Griffins runs while Will Reed added an insurance run with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Logan Daigle suffered the loss allowing three runs on six hits and struck six over six innings.
St. Amant vs. Dutchtown
In the last Tuesday’s win at Gator Park, Dutchtown overcame a 1-0 deficit to score a pair of runs in the top of the fourth for the 2-1 road win.
Trey Webb’s solo home run in the bottom of the second had staked the Gators to a 1-0 lead.
Dalton Barbier doubled home the Griffins first run after Brayden Caskey reached on an error. Following a Will Reed single, Carter Landry’s RBI groundout scored Barbier with the go-ahead run.
Both Barbier and Reed had a pair of hits for the visitors.
Brock Barthelemy picked up the win for Dutchtown allowing four hits and one run while striking out eight. Zach Braud picked up his third save, striking out two in two innings.
Teddy Webb was the hard luck losing pitching going the distance allowing two runs on five hits and striking out seven.
Dutchtown completed the two-game sweep with a 3-1 win over the Gators at Griffin Park last Friday night.
Jessie Miller (6-0) worked 6 2/3 innings allowing one run, five hits and striking out two. Braud worked a third of an inning for his fourth save and second against the Gators.
Caskey provided Miller and the Griffins all the runs they needed with a two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the second. Caskey’s hit followed singles by Landry and Trey Martin.
Landry drove in the other Dutchtown run with his second hit that followed a leadoff double by Barbier in the bottom of the fifth.
St. Amant’s lone run came in the top of the third when Aaron Delaune’s sacrifice fly scored Trey Webb who had doubled to lead off the inning.
Delaune (3-4) suffered the loss pitching five innings, allowing all three runs on eight hits and striking out one.
District 5-5A This Week
The second-to-last week of district play will find Dutchtown hosting Lutcher on Monday in a non-district game at 6 pm. Broadmoor will visit Griffin Park on Tuesday in a doubleheader starting at 4pm before the Griffins home-and-home with Catholic High closes out the week. The Griffins visit Grizzly Field on Thursday at 6 pm before hosting the Bears at Griffin Park on Saturday at 2 pm.
East Ascension will pay a visit to Catholic High on Tuesday as the district co-leaders conclude their two-game series. The Spartans then play back-to-back non-district games on Thursday and Friday against Assumption starting at home Thursday before the two teams square off in Napoleonville on Friday.
EA closes out their week hosting McKinley in a doubleheader at Johnny Ambeau Park this Saturday beginning at 2 pm.
St. Amant will play a pair of doubleheaders this week at Gator Park beginning with McKinley on Tuesday then Broadmoor on Thursday. Both doubleheaders will start at 4 pm. With four games in three days, St. Amant will be off this coming Saturday.
