Dutchtown, St. Amant advance to volleyball state tournament

AREA VOLLEYBALL PLAYOFF ROUNDUP

The Dutchtown Griffins, coached by Pat Ricks, are headed to the Division I volleyball quarterfinals after their 3-0 sweep over No. 19 seed Ponchatoula (25-8, 25-18, 25-21) in the regional round last Saturday at the Griffin gym in Geismar.

Dutchtown entered the playoffs as the three-seed which is the highest seeding in school history and now advance to the state tourney for the first time since 2008 after playoff wins over Hammond and Ponchatoula.

Dutchtown (38-7) will face No. 6 seed Fontainebleau in a quarterfinal matchup this Thursday.

Joining the Lady Griffins at the LHSAA state tourney this week will be No. 7 seed St. Amant who downed No. 23 Slidell 3-1 (25-13, 25-13, 16-25, 29-27) at the Gold Dome on Saturday.

St. Amant will be making their ninth straight trip to the state tourney after wins over Natchitoches Central and Slidell in the first two rounds this postseason.

For the second straight year the Gators will face Archbishop Chapelle in the quarterfinals. Last year St. Amant downed the Chipmunks 3-1 to advance to the semifinals for the third time in five years.

No. 8 East Ascension (26-16) had a chance to make it a trio of Ascension parish teams in the final eight but fell to HL Bourgeois 3-1 (13-25, 25-16, 25-20, 25-23) last Saturday morning at the Spartan gym. The Lady Spartans swept Byrd to advance to the regional round.

The LHSAA State Volleyball Tournament will run this Thursday through Saturday at Pontchartrain Center in Kenner.

Bidistrict Round

Dutchtown won in straight sets 25-13, 25-16, 25-8 over No. 30 Hammond (20-20) to advance to the regional round at home against Ponchatoula.

St. Amant, playing their first playoff game in the Gold Dome in three years, swept past Natchitoches Central (20-9) in straight sets, 25-10, 27-25, 25-10, to advance to the regional round at home against No. 23 Slidell (14-17) who upset No. 10 Ruston 25-17, 25-21, 25-17.

No. 8 East Ascension defeated No. 25 Byrd in straight sets 25-20, 25-18, 25-19 to reach the regional round for the second straight year.

Lutcher Swept in Regional Round

De La Salle eliminated Lutcher 3-0 with a sweep of the regional round match in New Orleans last Thursday.

The Lady Cavaliers won by scores of 25-8, 25-22 and 25-11.

The Lady Bulldogs were led by Ashlyn St. Pierre who scored eight kills and Kristen Poche who had five service aces.

Dunham Rallies Past ACHS

No. 5 seed Dunham advanced to the Division V quarterfinals with a 3-1 win over Ascension Catholic in the regional round at Dunham last Thursday.

Dunham (34-6) rallied to eliminate the Lady Bulldogs (21-25, 25-22, 25-21 and 25-17).

ACHS (17-17) was led by Emme Medine with 21 digs while Catherine Rome and Isabelle Abadie each had 14 digs.
