EAST ASCENSION VS DUTCHTOWN
Griffins at Spartans
Oct. 18, 2019 at 7 p.m.
With Darnell Lee
Head Football Coach
East Ascension High School
Sports Scene: You had a loss that was kind of a lot like last year’s game against Catholic?
Coach Lee: It is what it is. We felt good going into the game getting some guys back from injury. We knew coming in we had to battle the storm early because they get after you early with a couple of trick plays. I felt like we did that but it kind of fell apart and the wheels fell off the wagon. They are a great ball club.
Sports Scene: There were some opportunities to get it to one possession but it didn’t work out?
Coach Lee: You have to take your hat off to Catholic High. They are a phenomenal team. They are battle tested and undefeated and I feel like this will make us better down the stretch.
Sports Scene: The records don’t tell the whole story going into Dutchtown?
Coach Lee: We have seen the film on Dutchtown and I knew it wouldn’t be long before Coach Mistretta got them rolling. They have some talent and we see them clicking. Their offense is getting better every week and the defense is flying around holding opponents almost scoreless. So we are looking forward to a great game this week. We are coming off a loss and are going to have our kids ready to play.
Sports Scene: Steven McBride had another big game despite the loss this week?
Coach Lee: He is a machine. Steve is playing like a man on a mission. Anytime you dial him up whether it is a screen or a deep ball, he is going to sell his body out to make the play. That knee is still bothering Cameron Jones and his right ankle is still a little banged up but Catholic High did a great job against us. We didn’t have our best offensive performance and they played a role in our lack of success. Sports Scene: Dutchtown hasn’t played the schedule that you guys have?
Coach Lee: We hope it will help us because being battle-tested is one of the reasons I made that schedule the way I did. I feel like the Spartans should always compete and I want us to compete for four quarters. I think this schedule has prepared us for anybody we play from here on out. This is a rivalry game and our kids are going to be up for it.
Sports Scene: There is a lot of familiarity between the two schools?
Coach Lee: If it would have been open when I was in high school, I would have been at Dutchtown. I am from Geismar and all my family lives in Geismar. It is not quite as big as the EA-St. Amant rivalry but it is going to be a fun week.
Sports Scene: What are you looking to get out of Dutchtown?
Coach Lee: You can expect them to be sound in all facets of the game. I feel like we have been improving every week in special teams. Defensively we have given up some points but we have also had some key stops. Offensively, we have put up numbers but as of late, it has been a little slow and I feel like we need to start fast this week and get our running game going. We have guys on the perimeter that can make plays. We have to open it up. This is not the time to be conservative or panic. In my book, it is the time for our kids to start having fun.
