Ehret edges EA in Class 5A quarterfinal heartbreaker

EA Falls in Thriller

HARVEY John Ehret overcame a 9-point deficit in the final five minutes to defeat East Ascension 27-24 in a Class 5A quarterfinal round playoff game last Friday night at Harold “Hoss” Memtsas Stadium.

The winning score came with 52 seconds remaining when backup quarterback Jacoby Windman escaped from the Spartans pass rush and maintained his balance after a near-sack to throw downfield into the waiting arms of Ja’Ron Glenn on a 44-yard touchdown reception.

The Spartans were in the quarterfinals for just the fourth time in school history and had taken a 24-15 lead on a blocked field goal attempt by Jyren Ester that was returned 78 yards by Jaqunn Mitchell for a touchdown with 5:49 left in the game.

From that point, Ehret flipped the script on the Spartans who went on a fourth quarter 21-0 blitz to come-from-behind to defeat Slidell, 28-25, last week in the regional round.

After Mitchell’s return gave the Spartans a 9-point lead, Brandon James returned the ensuing kickoff 41 yards to the Ehret 43.

The Patriots responded with a 6-play drive that ended with Travis Mumphrey’s 17-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Pickney that was tipped to cut into the visitors lead to 24-21 with 4:06 remaining.

East Ascension, limited to nine yards rushing and 34 passing yards in the second half, converted a key third-and six on the ensuing drive before having to punt with 1:59 left and one timeout for the Patriots.

Mumphrey, who completed 22 of 33 passes for 268 yards, had to leave the game during the final drive with cramps and Windman stepped in and threw his only pass of the game for the dramatic touchdown.

East Ascension (11-2) returned the ensuing kickoff to their own 20 and six plays later Jason Wakefield was sacked at his 31 on the final play of the game.

The Patriots jumped out to a 12-0 lead starting with a 6-play, 40-yard drive capped off with Mumphrey’s 2-yard touchdown pass to De’ron Coleman. JEHS stretched their lead to 12-0 when Mumphrey scrambled 13-yards for a score, twelve seconds into the second quarter.

On Ehret’s first scoring drive, leading rusher Damond Leonard left with an injury and did not return limiting the Patriots running game to only 26 yards in the second half.

Trailing 12-0, EA responded with a pair of Wakefield 1-yard touchdowns beginning with his 1-yard sneak into the end zone. The score was setup by Cameron Jones 34-yard pass to Kael Babin down to the Ehret 17-yard line.

Wakefield’s second 1-yard run of the quarter capped a 6-play, 34-yard drive that was setup by Javon Carter’s interception and the Spartans led with 2:59 left in the second quarter.

The Patriots retook the lead with 47 second left in the half on George Moreno’s 30-yard field goal and a 15-14 halftime lead.

After both teams failed to score in the third quarter, Alberto Ontiveros gave the Spartans the 17-15 lead with a 22-yard field goal preceding the dramatic Mitchell kick-block return that upped the EA lead to nine points with just under six minutes remaining.

East Ascension set a school record with eleven wins and are now 1-3 all-time in quarterfinal games with 1991 the only time advancing to the semifinals

In three years under coach Darnell Lee, the Spartans are 23-12 and have reached the regional round twice and the quarterfinals once.
