East Ascension coach Katie Marse

GONZALES – East Ascension used a nine-run second inning to jump ahead of Dutchtown and claim a 12-7 District 5-5A opening victory Thursday evening at Lady Spartan Field.

It was East Ascension’s first victory over Dutchtown since 2016 and the first time the Lady Spartans (4-3, 1-0) opened district with a victory in three years under coach Katie Marse.

Brynnen Gautreau went 3-for-4 with three RBIs to lead East Ascension and Rebecca Burke added three RBIs hitting 2-for-5. Rachel Ducote was also 2-for-5 with two RBIs and Jada Goodlow was 2-for-4 with one RBI.

Dutchtown (5-5, 0-1), under coach Nancy Ensminger, was led by Kassidy Hood who went 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Anna Jones also was 2-for-5.

The teams combined for 25 hits but it was three errors by Dutchtown that allowed East Ascension to have a big second inning after the Lady Griffins had taken an early 2-0 lead behind RBI singles from Hood and Skylar Boyd.

EA knotted it up in the bottom of the first on Ducote’s RBI triple and Gauteau’s RBI single.
