Lions fall to top seed Vermilion Catholic in first round

ABBEVILLE – Ascension Christian fell to top seed Vermilion Catholic 50-7 in the first round of the Division IV playoffs Friday night.

The Lions (3-8), under coach Josh Puryear, were making their first playoff appearance since 2013 and were outgained in total yardage 401-200.

Vermilion Catholic (10-1) jumped out to a 36-0 halftime lead and never looked back. The Eagles advance to face No. 8 seed Metairie Park Country Day in the quarterfinals.

Moe Maxile rushed for a pair of touchdowns for Vermilion Catholic on runs of 43 and 26 yards. Andre LeBlanc and Joshua Segrera added scoring runs and J.P. Summers also caught a 39-yard touchdown from Mikie Bazar.

The Lions lone score came on a 5-yard run by Elijah Huber. Zachary Diez was 18-of-37 passing for 152 yards for Ascension Christian.
