SHREVEPORT – Top seed St. James High overcame an early deficit to cruise by Green Oaks in a 41-8 Class 3A regional playoff victory Friday night at Independence Stadium.
The Wildcats (12-0), undefeated and the District 6-3A champion under coach Robert Valdez, will now host No. 24 Brusly (7-5) in the quarterfinals in Vacherie. The Panthers upset eighth seed Marksville 34-20 Friday night.
St. James running back Sean LeBeouf rushed for 133 yards and three touchdowns in the win over Green Oaks. Wildcat quarterback Shamar Smith had touchdowns passing and rushing and Chase Geason and Savion Jones each had a pair of sacks defensively.
The 17th seeded Giants (6-6) drove 85 yards on the opening possession capped by a 1-yard touchdown run from Ja-Me’s Sanders to go ahead 8-0.
St. James quickly answered with a 51-yard touchdown pass from Smith to Shazz Preston and knotted it up 8-8 on a Green Oaks botched punt that resulted in a safety.
LeBeouf put the Wildcats ahead on a 5-yard scoring run and Smith’s 3-yard touchdown made it 22-8 at the half. LeBeouf added a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter and reserve quarterback Marquell Bergeron’s score reflected the final tally.
