St. Amant went undefeated while East Ascension finished with two wins in three games in the St. Amant Invitational hosted this past weekend by the Gators at Butch Gore Park.

Alyssa Romano and Kailey Dufour combined to lead St. Amant to a 1-0 win over St. Louis in their opener last Friday night. Dufour’s fifth inning home run accounted for the only run while Romano struck out 13 Saints and allowed only two hits.

St. Amant nipped Zachary 4-3 on Payton Granier’s RBI fielder’s choice in the top of the seventh inning after the Broncos had tied the game at 3-3 in their half of the sixth. Rylee Rossi, Sophie Smith, and Addie Bourgeois each collected two hits to lead St. Amant with Granier driving in two runs. Romano allowed four hits and three runs, striking out nine and walking one in picking up the win.

The Gators made quick work of Vanderbilt Catholic 10-0 in five innings in their final game of the two-day tourney. St. Amant used a six-run fourth inning to blow the game open and record their seventh straight win.

Naylie Rodrigues, Julia Kramer, Romano and Granier all drove in runs in the inning, including a two-run home run by Rodrigues.

In the three-game sweep, Romano was stellar in the circle pitching 19 innings and allowing eight hits and only 2 earned runs while striking out 26 batters with just one walk.

East Ascension opened the tourney on Friday with an 8-5 win over Vanderbilt Catholic. The Spartans picked up 14 hits in the win over the Terriers, including two hits apiece by Rebecca Burke, Rachel Ducote, Jada Goodlow, Brynnen Gautreau, Ali Burt, and Carly Ross.

In the three-run third inning, Ross had the big hit with a two-run double and Goodlow added a home run in the fifth. Freshman pitcher Alayna Joseph struck out four and did not walk a batter.

The Spartans were blanked on Saturday morning by Olivia Lackie and Holden 6-0. Lackie struck out 18 batters and allowed only two hits.  Goodlow and Endya Gillard had the hits for EA.

East Ascension bounced back later on Saturday to down St. Louis 10-6 with Goodlow picking up the win allowing five hits and striking out three.  All six runs for the Saints were unearned. The Spartans were led by Ducote’s first inning grand slam. Burt chipped in with a pair of doubles and two RBIs.

Another local school, Ascension Christian went 3-0 in the tourney with wins over Central Lafourche (5-2), Vanderbilt Catholic (8-4) and South Terrebonne (7-0).

All three 5-5A parish schools will be busy this week with St. Amant hosting Walker and East Ascension playing at Holden in non-district games Monday.

District play resumes on Tuesday with Dutchtown visiting St. Amant and EA hosting Broadmoor. Thursday’s league play includes St. Amant at McKinley, St. Joseph’s at East Ascension and Dutchtown hosting Broadmoor.

Dutchtown and St. Amant will wrap up play this week participating in the Sulphur Tourney with both teams playing one game on Friday and two games on Saturday at the Frasch Park complex, the site of the softball state championship games in late April.
