Gators Win District Opener

ST. AMANT – St. Amant opened District 5-5A play with a convincing 44-7 win over McKinley last Friday night at The Pit in St. Amant.

The game was delayed an hour and fifteen minutes because of lighting in the area and once it started the Gators quickly provided the strikes with three touchdowns in the first quarter.

After the visiting Panthers went three-and-out to start the game, Slade Zeppuhar capped a quick 3-play drive with a 15-yard touchdown run. Cole Poirrier’s two-point conversation run put the Gators up 8-0.

St. Amant next scored when Zeppuhar, holding on a field goal attempt, instead lofted a 6-yard TD pass to

Javin Augillard who out jumped a pair of Panthers defenders to cap a 9-play, 85-yard drive.

The Gators struck again when Richard Oliver’s first down pass was intercepted by defensive back Jordan Bennett and returned 42-yards for a touchdown and a 23-0 first quarter lead following Augillard’s two-point conversation run.

Just like the first quarter, the Gators defense continued to dominate setting up the next score following another three-and-out.

Zeppuhar capped a 9-play, 62-yard drive with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Austin Bascom and the senior wide out was on the receiving end of Poirrier’s 23-yard TD pass to close out the first half with the Gators on top 37-0.

The only scoring in the second half occurred in the fourth quarter with each team getting a touchdown as St. Amant rested their starters in the second half.

The final points for the Gators came when backup quarterback Blake LeBouef scored on a 6-yard run.

McKinley’s points came when Oliver found wide receiver Brian Chatman on a 15-yard touchdown pass.

St. Amant finished with 21 first downs and 411 total yards with a balanced attack that included 210 rushing yards and 201 yards through the air. In all, four SAHS quarterbacks threw passes in the district opener.

McKinley (1-5, 0-1) was limited to 2 first downs and 45 yards total offense, including just 20 rushing yards.

St. Amant (4-2, 1-0) now turns their attention to Woodlawn (1-5, 0-1) this Friday night at The Pit.
