Wildcats Comeback Bid Falls Short

SPRINGHILL Scottie Johnson scored three touchdowns in leading North Webster to a 26-23 win over St. James last Friday night in a Class 3A regional round game at Baucum-Farrar Stadium in Springhill.

St. James trailed 13-7 at the half before taking a 15-13 lead in the third quarter on a 45-yard touchdown pass from Shamar Smith to Shazz Preston and a successful two-point conversation.

Smith had a hand in all three of the Wildcats touchdowns, including 10-yard touchdown runs in the second and fourth quarters.

Smith threw for 146 yards and one touchdown while Preston had 65 yards in receptions. Sean Lebeouf was the leading rusher for the Wildcats with 50 yards.

The Knights added a pair of touchdowns in the final quarter to take their largest lead of the game at 26-15 with seven minutes remaining.

St. James (7-5) responded with a three-play, 65-yard drive that only took 30 seconds. Smith finished the drive with a 10-yard TD run to close the gap to 26-23.

The Wildcats had one last chance to either tie or take the lead when Chase Geason recovered a fumble on the Knights 36-yard line.

Smith moved the Wildcats deep into North Webster territory but the drive ended on a failed fourth-and-13 pass with two minutes remaining.

North Webster (8-4) ran the clock out to advance to the quarterfinals against top-seeded Iota.
