THIBODAUX – St. James High cruised to a 38-7 victory over E.D. White Friday night at Harvey Peltier Stadium to wrap up the District 9-3A title and close out a perfect regular season.
The Wildcats (10-0, 5-0), under coach Robert Valdez, won a district championship for the first time since 2010 outscoring opponents 219-26 in five wins and earned the top seed in the Class 3A playoffs with the undefeated season.
St. James quarterback Shamar Smith rushed for three touchdowns in the first half as the Wildcats scored on all but one possession. Smith capped the opening drive with a 36-yard scoring run and finished with 69 yards on 12 attempts also completing 11-of-18 passes for 128 yards.
Running back Sean LeBeouf carried the ball 21 times for 114 yards and scored on a 27-yard run as the third quarter wound down. Alec Mahler’s 41-yard field goal gave the Wildcats a 25-0 halftime lead and Daniel Jupiter had the final score on a 2-yard run.
Brad Batiste had an interception for the second straight week for St. James and Shazz Preston’s 43-yard reception setup a second quarter score.
E.D. White’s only points came with just over two minutes remaining on a 3-yard run by Patrick Schonacher as the Cardinals (5-5, 3-2) were held to 150 yards of total offense.
St. James will host No. 32 Mansfield (4-6, 1-4) of District 1-3A in the first round on Friday night at Wildcat Stadium in Vacherie. The Wildcats advanced to the regionals last season before falling at North Webster 26-23.
