Top seed Acadiana too much for EA

By Lyall Boudreaux

EA Falls to Top-Seeded Acadiana

A pair of special teams touchdowns and four forced turnovers helped propel top-seeded Acadiana to a 42-14 win over East Ascension in regional round play last Friday night at Ted Davidson Field at Bill Dotson Stadium in Scott.

The Wreckin’ Rams defense came into the game allowing just 10 points a game and the No. 16 seed Spartans scored the second-most points on the AHS defense this season but untimely mistakes were the undoing for the visitors.

Acadiana (8-1) never trailed in the second-round playoff game after putting together an 8-play, 61-yard drive that was capped by Tyvin Zeno’s 18-yard touchdown run with 3:49 left in the first quarter. The missed extra point left the home team up 6-0.

A special teams breakdown by the Spartans led to the next points for the Rams when Walter Bob blocked an EA punt that was scooped up and returned 5-yards for a touchdown by Caleb Arceneaux to increase their lead to 14-0.

East Ascension responded with a 14-play, 68-yard drive that resulted in Troy Dunn’s 4-yard touchdown pass to Kendall Washington to trim the lead to 14-7. Dunn completed 11 of 29 passes for 112 yards and one touchdown but also threw three interceptions.

EA’s momentum was short-lived as special teams struck again when Draulin Anthony returned the ensuing kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown increasing the AHS lead to 21-7 and sparking a three-touchdown blitz in the final four minutes of the second quarter.

Acadiana junior quarterback Jerimiah Brown appeared to close out the first half with a 1-yard TD plunge with :16 seconds left, but EA failed to recover the ensuing kickoff giving the ball right back to the Rams and Brown added a 28-yard touchdown run on the next play to all but end the Spartans upset dreams.

Armed with a 35-7 lead and a stingy defense, the Rams used their veer offense to chew time off the clock in the final two quarters.

Kevan Williams scored the final touchdown for the Rams on a 26-yard run in the third quarter and EA’s second touchdown came on a 30-yard scoop-and-score return by senior Kael Babin in the closing seconds of the game.

East Ascension (5-4) was playing in their fifth straight regional round game under fifth year head coach Darnell Lee and have advanced to the quarterfinal round once (2018) during those five seasons.

Lee, a 1993 EA graduate, became the all-time leader in playoff wins last week with six. The Spartans are now 6-4 under Lee in the postseason.

The Wreckin’ Rams, the defending Class 5A state champs, advance to the quarterfinals where they will host No. 8-seed Mandeville.
