VACHERIE – St. James High School made quick work of Lusher Charter with a 49-21 District 10-3A victory Friday night for homecoming bouncing back from a heartbreaking two-point loss to De La Salle the week before.
The Wildcats (6-3, 3-1), coached by Robert Valdez and No. 4 in the latest Class 3A power rankings released by the LHSAA, rebounded from a 21-19 loss to the Cavailers (6-3, 3-1), who fell to St. Charles Catholic (6-3, 4-0) Friday night 14-12.
St. James hosts the Comets Friday night at Wildcat Stadium with a chance to force a three-way tie for the league title with a victory.
Wildcat quarterback Shamar Smith accounted for three touchdowns in the win including two rushing scores and completed 3-of-5 passes. Sean LeBeouf rushed for 100 yards and one touchdowns on six carries.
Smith connected with Shen Joseph for a 57-yard score to crack the scoreboard and LeBeouf followed with a 14-yard touchdown run. Brad Batiste returned an interception to push the lead to 29-0 in the first quarter after a 1-yard touchdown run by Smith.
Marqeuell Bergeron connected with Logan Gravois for a 48-yard touchdown and scored on a 20-yard run in the third quarter to make it 49-0 through three quarters after Smith’s 5-yard touchdown run gave St. James a 36-0 halftime lead.
Bergeron finished with 114 yards on nine attempts and Gravois had three receptions for 53 yards.
The Lions (1-8, 0-4) scored a trio of touchdowns in the fourth quarter to reflect the final tally.
